Durante a 63ª Reunião Anual da American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), que ocorreu entre os dias 2 e 6 de novembro, em New Orleans, Lousiana, o Ebola esteve entre os temas mais recorrentes nos debates. O evento, porém não deixou de lado outras enfermidades recorrentes nos países pobres, como a malária, a dengue e o cólera. Aqueles que trabalham em todo mundo contra esses males também não foram esquecidos. Ao todo, cinco profissionais envolvidos com as doenças tropicais foram agraciados com o Honorary International Fellows, concedido pela ASTMH. São eles: Mitermayer Galvão dos Reis (Brasil), Delia Enria (Argentina), Akira Ito (Japão), David Molyneux (Reino Unido) e Sow Samba (Mali).

O presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical (SBMT), Dr. Mitermayer, doutor em Patologia Humana, disse estar lisonjeado com a honraria e lembrou que, para alcançá-la, é preciso apoio familiar e profissional. “Este é um reconhecimento dado a cidadãos não americanos que fizeram grandes contribuições no campo da Medicina Tropical, além de auxílio em trabalhos internacionais. Não só em número de contribuições à ciência, mas também pela atuação como gestor na área e pela orientação a estudantes. Para chegar a um estágio desses é preciso ter bom suporte da família, como minha esposa e colega, Eliana Reis, e meu filho, Mitermayer Almeida Reis, e também dos colegas de profissão. A produção científica é fruto de trabalhos que se desenvolvem em colaboração com vários pesquisadores, estudantes e assistentes administrativos”, explicou.

O reconhecimento internacional se deve às contribuições dadas pelo pesquisador, que é baiano, tanto à comunidade científica quanto à sociedade. Quem garante é o doutor em Doenças Contagiosas, Dr. Ronald Blanton, cientista da Universidade Case Western Reserve (EUA), um dos especialistas que indicou o brasileiro à honraria. De acordo com ele, enquanto o Dr. Mitermayer esteve à frente da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, na Bahia, a instituição alcançou um grau de excelência comparável aos melhores centros do mundo. Entre as alterações citadas pelo norte-americano, além da estrutura física, está a integração entre os cientistas e a abertura do local para a comunidade. A honraria o torna membro permanente da ASTMH.

Dr. Mitermayer foi diretor da Fiocruz/Bahia por quatro mandatos e é membro da Academia de Medicina da Bahia. Atualmente, é chefe do Laboratório de Patologia e Biologia Molecular da Fundação, além de coordenador do curso de pós-graduação em Biotecnologia em Saúde e Medicina Investigativa. Tem experiência em doenças parasitárias e infecciosas com ênfase em esquistossomose, hepatites virais, leptospirose, dengue, meningites bacterianas, tuberculose e hemoglobinopatias.

O evento

Na abertura da 63ª Reunião Anual da ASTMH, o ex-presidente e fundador da Microsoft, Bill Gates, afirmou que o momento é de ataque ao Ebola na África Ocidental para garantir o fim da epidemia da doença, sendo essa a última – outras ocorreram no continente africano nos anos de 1995, 2000 e 2007. Ele chamou o surto de um “momento crucial na saúde global” e reconheceu que os países mais ricos finalmente estão atentando para o tema, mas é preciso ações mais efetivas. Gates também ressaltou que o fortalecimento dos sistemas de saúde é a melhor maneira de proteger a população contra epidemias.

A necessidade de fortalecimento dos sistemas de saúde, com o objetivo de prevenir situações de risco à população, também foi destacada pelo recém empossado presidente da ASTMH, Dr. Christopher Plowe, durante o evento. “O surto de Ebola já deixou claro que, quando se trata do risco representado por doenças transmissíveis, precisamos esperar o inesperado. Pode ser um vírus diferente, mas vamos enfrentar outras ameaças e precisamos estar preparados para lidar com elas”, afirmou.

During the 63^rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), that took place from November 2 to 6 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Ebola was among the debates’ most recurrent themes. The event, however, approached other diseases recurrent in poor countries, as malaria, dengue fever and cholera. Those who work all over the world with these diseases were not forgotten as well. At all, five professionals involved with tropical diseases were awarded with the Honorary International Fellows, given by the ASTMH. They were: Mitermayer Galvao dos Reis (Brazil), Delia Enria (Argentina), Akira Ito (Japan), David Molyneux (UK) and Sow Samba (Mali).

The president of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (BSTM), Dr. Mitermayer, PhD in Human Pathology, said to be flattered with the honor and remembered that in order to achieve it, family and professional support are necessary. “This is a great acknowledgment given to non-American citizens who made relevant contributions in the Tropical Medicine field, besides assisting in international projects. Not only the number of contributions for science, but also the role as manager in the area and orienting students. To achieve such level, a good family support is required, as my wife and colleague Eliana Reis and my son Mitermayer Almeida Reis, and also professional colleagues. The scientific production is the result of projects that develop with the cooperation of several researchers, students and administrative assistants”, explained.

The international acknowledgment is a result of the contributions made by the Bahia-born researcher to both the scientific community and the society. This is assured by the PhD in Infectious Diseases, Dr. Ronald Blanton, scientist at the Case Western Reserve University (USA), one of the experts who nominated the Brazilian researcher for the award. According to him, while Dr. Mitermayer was ahead of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Bahia, the institution reached an excellency level compared to the best centers in the world. Among the enhancements listed by the North-American researcher, besides the physical structure, is the integration among scientists and the opening for the community. The honor makes him a permanent ASTMH member.

Dr. Mitermayer was director of Fiocruz/Bahia for four mandates and is member of the Bahia Medical Academy. Currently he is head of the Pathology and Molecular Biology Laboratory at the Foundation, besides coordinator of the post-graduation course in Biotechnology in Health and Investigative Medicine. He is experienced in parasitary and infectious diseases, especially schistosomiasis, viral hepatitis, leptospirosis, dengue fever, bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis and hemoglobinopathies.

The event

During the opening of the 63^rd Annual Meeting of the ASTMH, the Microsoft’s ex-president and founder, Bill Gates, said it is the moment to attack Ebola in West Africa and assure the end of the disease’s outbreak, and making this the last one – the others occurred in Africa in 1996, 2000 and 2007. He considered the outbreak as a “crucial global health moment” and acknowledged the rich countries are finally giving the theme the necessary attention, but stronger measures are still needed. Gates also stressed that the strengthening of the health systems is the best way to protect the populations against epidemics.

The need to strengthen the health systems, aiming to prevent risk situations against the population, was also approached by the newly elected ASTMH president, Dr. Chirstopher Plowe during the event. “The Ebola outbreak has already made clear that, when dealing with a risk represented by infectious diseases, we must expect the unexpected. It may be a different virus, but we will face other threats and we must be ready to deal with them”, affirmed.…
